So, what happens when the breast-feeding ends?

I saw a video on youtube and it brought to mind something I was thinking about around 3:30 a.m. when I was up breast-feeding Baby Girl.

When I stop breast-feeding entirely -- will the weight start creeping back?

I have concerns about the performance of my thyroid functions because with my increased activity and decreased caloric intake, I think I really ought to be losing weight faster than I am when you actually factor in the breast-feeding.

So I am worried about what will happen when I stop.

Son was weaned at about 16 months when I got really sick and was put on steroids and antibiotics so I had to stop breast-feeding.

I know Baby Girl is only 8 months old but she's been on solids for awhile - Son didn't start solids until he was 9 months.

So I do wonder what will happen when I stop breast-feeding...

And now for that ad I saw on youtube...

Here it is!

  1. I'm not even going to bother pointing out the fact that you lost all of this weight before you met hubs *without* breastfeeding... okay, maybe I will bother.

We're in this together FAB, keep each other on the straight an narrow... your weight might creep up a little when you stop breastfeeding, but keep in mind if you increase your cardio by 45 minutes a day, you are going to burn that same amount of calories.

  2. I thought breast-feeding was equal to 2 hrs of cardio?

  3. I think you will be okay. I breastfed all of my kids for about a year each, the last one was a little longer. I didn't really lose weight while I was nursing them, but I didn't gain weight when I stopped, either. I don't really think it "burns" as many calories as they say, I definitely didn't feel like I needed to do 2 hrs of cardio to make up for it when I stopped.

I think part of the reason I didn't start gaining weight when I stopped, though, was because you usually don't stop cold turkey and go from nursing 8 times a day to zero. Usually in the process of weaning, you drop nursing sessions slowly, which gives your body a chance to get used to it.

    I really think you'll be okay. :)
