I said, "yeah."
She then informs me that one of the units our unit is sandwiched by is on fire.
ON FIRE!
We are still well over an hour away from home and our pets are in our basement.
As soon the fire dept said it was OK - 1G1D1Y went in and rescued my dog and eventually my cat, who was in hiding.
No fire or soot or water damage inside my place BUT the smell is horrible - like a campfire someone dropped a plstic bottle in.
Worse than burnt hair.
Waiting for a claims adjuster cuz there is no way we can sleep there tonight... don't know about our mattresses or our clothes - and can smoke damage electronics?
Am posting from 1G1D1Y's kitchen-- and I really want to stuff my face right now because I am very freaked out.
I am SO thankful that no one was hurt BUT I m still losing my mind...
Holy crap. Thank God your pets were ok! I think the smoke will come out of your clothes with some tumbles in the dryer with dryer sheets or dry cleaning-which I hope your insurance covers...the mattress may be shot. Dude, I am so sorry, that really sucks, but seriously thank goodness no one was hurt.

Oh my gosh! That is awful. I feel for your neighbours. And I am glad that your place didn't burn and that your pets are okay.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about claims for someone attached to a burned unit. I would imagine that some compensation may be forthcoming, But I don't know. Especially since we are in different countries. I hope that everything works out.
Instead of stuffing your face, if you can, take a nice, long, hot bubble bath and destress that way. I would suggest a stiff drink, but that isn't a good idea when breast feeding. ;)
That is what scares me about being attached to another unit by a common wall. And honestly, knowing the building codes around here, I don't think that there is all that much fire separation between us and the unit next door. Thankfully, it is still empty. :)
Oh, no!!! I'm so glad your whole family, including your fur babies, are okay! Wow, how scary... I second the idea of the bubble bath in lieu of the face stuffing. And the stiff drink -- how about a fruit smoothie served in a daiquiri glass instead? And a big hug. *HUG!*
ReplyDeleteOh, that's so scary, I'm glad too that your pets are all ok and that no one was hurt. What a shock.
ReplyDeleteI hope that things can get back in order soon.
Hang in there.
Oh, FAB.....I am just horrified to hear this, and can read the stress in your words so I can only imagine how you must have felt. Deep breath now that no one was injured and that you didn't lose everything. I know it's just more to add to the pile, but hold on to the small things right now and it will help you through. If I find out anything about smoke smell, I'll let you know. BIG hugs your way!
ReplyDeleteWhat a disaster. I'm so glad nobody was hurt - that's the important part. But stuff, oh the stuff! You will be put through a huge hassle because of somebody else's negligence and that is never easy thing to deal with.
ReplyDeleteBreathe . .. . exercise . . . feel . . . keep your compassion about you and hug the family (pet included) tight.
We live in a lower condo in a townhouse. The upper condos caught on fire in the summer of 2002 ... it was a $1.5 million repair after it was over. We were out for about two months (we just had water damage) ... the upper units were out for about eight months. It was a horrible time for us all. Thankfully it's just a blip in our memory now.
