OK, so one of my favourite shows is CBS' "How I Met Your Mother."
I have done my best to get everyone I know to watch HIMYM (and Cougartown and a few other shows I love) and HIMYM is the one most of my friends have gotten into.
They do tend to hesitate to love shows I love since a lot of shows I love have been canceled (imho) before their time (see: Firefly, Invasion, Better Off Ted, Greg the Bunny, Tru Calling, Dark Angel, Swingtown etc...)
Anyway, Hubs was reading the paper while at Kung Fu with Son and saw in the entertainment news that sitcom writer Chuck Tatham was going to be speaking at a university here in town tonight and that it was free and open to the public.
So he told me about it.
I posted the article to my FB and then called 1G1D1Y to see if she wanted to go with me.
She did.
It was great!
Mr. Tatham was unassuming, funny, well-spoken and very engaging. I really enjoyed myself, I asked a question, 1G1D1Y asked two questions... some film-maker dude asked a super-long question... there was a lot of laughter and a good amount of questions.
When it was over, I decided to see if I could get Mr. Tatham to sign the DVD sleeve from my season 5 set (since that set has the episode "Duel Citizenship" which he wrote and did an audio commentary on it as well).
So, I stepped over the empty row of seats in front of me and scooted over to the podium which was right by the door and waited until the person in front of me had a short conversation with Mr. Tatham.
Then I very apologetically said, "I know this might seem tacky but would you mind signing this for me?"
I presented the sleeve and a Sharpie I had on hand and he was great, said it wasn't tacky at all and asked who to make it out to.
I told him my name, then spelled it and said, "Feel free to use it in an episode someday."
I also informed him that I was going to have to put out for Hubs since he stayed home with the kids so I could go to the university for the event.
I'm going to post the scan of the autograph but then you are all going to know my first name...
I also snapped a few pics of him while he was speaking (I'll load a couple)...
And I took a short video which is still uploading to youtube so I'll edit this entry (probably at some point tomorrow) so I can add it.
All in all, after the frustrating nature of the beginning of my day - this event was a FABULOUS end to it!!!
:>
Awesome! I'm glad you had such a great time, even if I'm not so much of a HIMYM fan (sorry)...
ReplyDeleteNo worries, Gini!
ReplyDeleteI *did* have a great time :>
SERIOUSLY!!?? You and I are like TV and movie soulmates. I love HIMYM, Swingtown, Firefly, Cougar Town, etc. I would have jumped at the opportunity to go to a lecture like this. You would think living in LA I would be more plugged into events like this. Once I get my mom here (hello, live in babysitter) I will start looking for more events to attend like this.
ReplyDeleteThe hubs and I did one of those Kevin Smith gab fests a few months after I had Holly. It was a blast. Please say you are a Kevin Smith film fan too :)
I love Kevin Smith!!! And you prompted me to write a bit about him in my most recent post as well as back-dating a crossposting from another blog of mine...
